Both the scientific literature on handedness and the case studies that I and others have investigated show that a person’s handedness can vary from task to task, and may change throughout the course of their lives. I coined the term ‘handedness story’ to encapsulate the idea that handedness is not a dichotomy of left and right, but rather a subtle, nuanced narrative of a person’s use of their hands throughout their life. In my research, for example, I firmly believe that knowing as much detail as possible about a person’s handedness story is essential to understanding their handedness approaches. In the case of idiodextrous musicians, I am fascinated by the different reasons – however conscious or intuitive, and to whatever degree motivated by internal and external factors – for which they (or better said, ‘we’ – for I too am one!) adopt an idiodextrous approach to their instrument/s.
